The answer? Both!!

You might remember the award winning ad campaign that put FedEx on the map, "When it absolutely, positively, has to be there overnight." We have Mike Tesch to thank for that clever TV spot. We can also applaud Mike Tesch for his involvement in some very memorable Dunkin Donuts and Tonka Toys ad campaigns.

Tesch has won over 500 awards and was voted to ADWEEKS All American Creative Team. His work can be seen in the Smithsonian Institute and more recently, his work has become available to the public! His artwork that is!

After his departure from the advertising world, Mike Tesch picked up his paintbrushes and seemingly never put them down. His abstracts have been exhibited at galleries in Wynwood (Miami) as well as Art Basel Miami. His affinity for Folk Art can be seen in some of his pieces and more recently, his love for animals has manifested in his newest company endeavor: TeschPets. You send him a photo of your beloved pet, and he paints it!

So when it came time to pick out a new pair of glasses, I knew I wanted to do something fun and different from what I've done the past two years, i.e. Ray-Bans.
So, I shopped around for a bit and thought I knew what I wanted - Blonde Tortoiseshell Cat Eyes. But I stumbled into an eyecare shop near our house that flipped my optical world upside-down: Eye Contact West

The shop is set up like a jewelry store - that's right, jewelry for your face! - so initially I had the inclination to turn around and leave because I didn't necessarily want to work with someone just to try on glasses. But boy am I glad I stayed! The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable and they genuinely love assisting people to find the perfect pair of glasses. Plus they carry an amazing selection of high end, boutique designer frames.

I truly must have tried on 150 pairs of glasses! And during the process I learned that my current Ray-Bans don't actually fit me properly at all! They have a poor temple fit and are also ill-fitting throughout the temple.

After spending roughly 2 hours playing dress-up, I narrowed my selection down to 5 frames. No easy feat, I must add. I tried on Dita, Wissing, Roger and so many other brands including the following five finalists:

Last night, I was browsing through the local estate sales
online, and came across a sale which seemed promising. Since moving to Florida, Josh and I have only
been to one sale where we found some good items, and to be honest, we struck
gold! We bought 9, yes 9, “Lord Yo”
chairs for $90. That’s $10 a piece for
indoor/outdoor chairs designed by Philipe Starck for Driade. Insane!
But I’ll save that story for
another post…

So anyways, we set our alarm this morning (not too early,
who are we kidding) and had some coffee and buttered biscuits before hitting
the road. The sale was down in
Pinecrest, a “Suburban Village” just South of Miami, and took us about an hour
to get to.

The whole reason we wanted to go to this sale was because
the listing said there’d be folk art for sale.
And obviously we’re total nerds for folk art. So we get there (mind you 2.5 hours after the
sale started) and went immediately into the house to find the pièce de résistance…a Jimmy Lee Sudduth alligator painting. We didn’t see
it and figured it had been sold, but asked a sales-girl if she knew anything
about it. She didn’t, so we asked
another woman and that started a whole whirlwind of activity and
discussion!

Long story short, all of the folk art being sold at the sale
belonged to one of the sales-girls, but she didn’t actually have any of it at
the house, save for an amazing primitive horse salvaged from an old carousel
which was a tad out of our price range.
So after discussing a couple of the pieces we had seen online, we agreed
on some prices and she left the sale to go get them for us. Meanwhile we were just hanging out in the
front of the house like total creepers waiting for her return, when it started raining. We decided to head back in the house to shop
around some more.

My mom was with us too and she went in to look at some
jewelry while we were checking out a beautiful hand crafted frame that looked

created the piece from scrap metal he found up North, but I need to verify

While checking out a local Antique Mall recently, I came across an R A Miller "Preacher Man" tin cutout. At the time I felt the dealer had it priced a little too high, so I decided not to purchase it. However, that quirky little cutout kept pestering my thoughts. I began looking online for more of his work and came across an awesome auction house in Georgia - located not 20 miles from where we used to live! The auction house had quite a few pieces by R A Miller, and hundreds more by the likes of Bill Traylor, S L Jones, Herbert Singleton, Purvis Young, Howard Finster, etc. etc. etc. But best of all, the Slotin Folk Art Auction would be holding their semiannual art auction in just a matter of days!

So after getting over the initial annoyance of not having known of the Slotin Folk Art Auction House while living in Georgia, I prepared myself for the day of the auction and waited patiently for my lots to come up. If you've ever bid online during a live auction, you know how nerve-wracking the process can be!

In addition to the R A Miller lots, there was a Howard Finster piece I had to have, but as expected, all of his work was closing for much higher than my pocket book could afford. And by the time you add taxes, commissions and shipping, you're in for much more than you want to be anyways, so I passed on the lot. Then, much to my dismay, the R A Millers were closing higher than they ever had historically! So from an investment standpoint, it didn't make sense to move forward on them either.

The auction was a bust. I was really bummed out that we wouldn't be hanging any new folk art anytime soon. But! Coincidentally, the Hillsboro Antique Mall began advertising a 15th Anniversary Sale through November 15. So yesterday, I decided to head back over there to check it out. The particular dealer I was interested in was offering 15% off, so the price was right on the Preacher Man and I decided to get it. After seeing how high everything was going at the Slotin Folk Art Auction, I ended up getting a pretty sweet deal. Plus, I only had to pay taxes. No commissions. No shipping fees. Score!

And in addition to the Preacher Man, the dealer had a Dog by R A Miller that was offering a 15% discount as well...so I got it too! What a difference a day makes! I am elated!

Paint! Paint! This weekend, we took advantage of Sherwin-Williams' Four Day Super Sale and bought 7 gallons of paint and a handful of painting supplies. If you're in the market for paint, this is a great deal - 40% off paint and 30% off supplies! All-in-all, we spent under $200 and have enough paint to cover 2,500 square feet. For now, we're only painting the dining room, the hallways and all four bedrooms. We'll get to the rest of the house later...
But that being said, I can tend to get caught up in a single design idiom for long periods of time and then find myself trying to mash-up items I already have to create a cohesive, well balanced space.

Now that we're all moved into our new house in South Florida, we've been working on getting all of our rooms up to par. There's tons of work to be done all throughout the house, but we are going to focus on the bedrooms first, since those will require the least amount of effort.

First up, Guest Bedroom #1. This room is pretty basic. Other than the king size bed and the little library, there isn't much else going on in here besides a small chair and two "side tables". We don't have to do too much to this room, but we are going to add crown molding and drapes after we paint the walls and a ceiling fan - an essential down here. And I think it goes without saying, the vertical blinds have to go! We'll also be adding a few more pieces of art to the room once it's all buttoned up as well as a lamp or two.

As a quick little study, I threw together this design board to see how everything we already had in the space (or will have soon) would work together. Right now, the only thing I'm waiting on is the Marimekko Kivet duvet cover - which will be here Thursday! As you can see, the palette is pretty modern, so I'll need to find some fun little antiques to throw in here to keep the vintage modern vibe we've got going on throughout the rest of the house.
I also photoshopped some down and dirty images to help us make some decisions concerning the drapes and a headboard.
I guess I've put off doing this for so long because I'm no etymologist and I've yet to find a definition online that I could plagiarize - I mean "reference". Joking!

So I guess I'll give it a shot. Here goes:

Design Idiom: A language one uses to describe their design aesthetic.

Or in other words, your design philosophy - or style. For example, if you want to create a space that evokes images of the industrial era, but you want to maintain a sense of warmth and livability, you might define your design idiom as "Industrial Chic".
Other popular design idioms are: Art Deco, Spanish Colonial, Shabby Chic, Mid Century Modern and so on. But most of us tend to marry one or more styles together, creating our own unique aesthetic. So, I ask you, what's your Design Idiom?!

Mine? Well it's pretty eclectic. Maybe you'd say, Vintage Modern.Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03722889588744578906noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6627890652302596930.post-91663720883197745642012-09-13T18:53:00.002-04:002012-09-16T20:19:21.919-04:00Just Like Christmas! After renting for the past two years where most of our artwork and furniture was in storage, I've felt like a kid on Christmas uncrating everything! It's so exciting to see all of the pieces we've collected over the years again and although our new house is as vanilla as it gets - beige walls, beige floors, beige doors, beige cabinetry - it's already starting to feel like home with all of our furniture out and some of our artwork hung.
Over time, we will replace the original beige tile and carpet in our home with hardwoods and the outdated kitchen will be gutted and revitalized with modern cabinets/appliances, but in the meantime, we'll start adding character to our house with a bit of color on the walls and updating light fixtures and window treatments. Our house was built in 1991, and while the original owner meticulously maintained the home, e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g is original!
Back in May, my husband was promoted to General Manager of Document Management in South Florida. A few weeks later, Josh moved from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale. He lived in hotels during the week and flew home on the weekends.

Meanwhile, I was frantic - trying to find a home in an area I'd only visited once - and had just two house hunting trips to do so. Thankfully we were hooked up with an AMAZING realtor who not only helped us find a great home, but became a friend along the way and supported us in every way possible! (Thanks, Robert!) If you find yourself looking for a realtor in South Florida, please let me know and I'll pass his information along to you!
So, now that we're moved in, and (almost) everything's in its place, I'm excited to get back to blogging! Getting acquainted with the art/design industry down here is gonna take some time, but I've already started networking at estate sales and look forward to really getting nestled into the design community.Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03722889588744578906noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6627890652302596930.post-42577370453215590842012-05-01T23:40:00.000-04:002012-05-01T23:40:39.066-04:00"He Experimented in Horror!"As promised in my last post, I spent the better part of my Saturday this past weekend at Four Seasons Auction Galleryand Event Center. The Rare
Sci-Fi, Horror & Movie Memorabilia Auction was a hoot! Steve White, the chief auctioneer, kept the mood light with his poignant jokes and quickly became my favorite auctioneer!

While there were hundreds of amazing movie related memorabilia to bid on, at the end of the day, I won just 4 lots - 3 original half sheet movie posters and 1 original window card as shown below. Enjoy!

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for auctions and there’s an
auction this weekend that mustn’t be missed!
The Four Seasons Auction Gallery

at this auction. There will be over 500
rare and unique items relating to sci-fi, horror, mainstream (and my favorite)
B movies. Many of the pieces even sport autographs. If you’re not lucky enough to live in or
around Atlanta, don’t fret, you can bid online at www.liveauctioneers.com!

house. (Okay, in actuality, I discovered the book department at Goodwill. I never realized they sold books but the
location nearest me has a phenomenal book section.) Now I find myself popping in over there
at least once a week. I walk straight
back to the book department, have a look, then peruse the nick-knacks to see
if there are any good treasures. There
never are. But before I leave, I always
check out the furniture and “frame” section - I would honestly die if I found a
valuable painting stacked on the jenky metal shelves in a thrift store like the
man from South Carolina who recently bought a painting for $3 and sold it for
$190,000!!! Check out the story here: $3

I’ve yet to find anything that looks even remotely valuable,
but I did come across a great hand-crafted frame yesterday that caught my
eye. It’s 36 inches square. Wood.
Modern. And it was cheap, so I
bought it. At first glance, the matted
print mounted behind the glass struck me as corny and childish. But the more I looked at it, the more I began
to think there was something to it. And
that’s how I became familiar with Sister Mary Corita (also known as Corita Kent). How I’ve never heard of her or seen her work
before now is perplexing, but what’s important is that I am in the know now!

I was immediately drawn to the colors and the images screen-printed on the bags but wasn't sure if I "needed" them. After walking through the entire store, I couldn't stop thinking about how fun these bags would be on a wall of an informal dining room. I decided to get them, hoping I could find more info about them online, but I really haven't been able to dig up too much. If anyone out there reading this has any info on "Border Brand" or "Polka Dot Brand" feed bags from the "Clement Feed Mill" in Waco, TX, printed by "W. Freeman - now Freeman Printing Company" please shoot me an e-mail!

Regardless of their value, I like them! They appeal to me. So I'm declaring them folk art and I'm looking forward to displaying them soon. I'll update this post with additional photos when I get them up!
In a sea of giant art-goers, this kid blocked-out all of the commotion around him and focused on the task at hand – reproducing the intricate maze of lines on the painted canvas in front of him. The fun thing about this piece is that upon your approach, the painted aluminum structure appears as though it’s protruding toward you. I love the way this stemware creates a stunning, balanced composition when set on a table. Which, according to Häberli, is no accident. Straight from the horse’s mouth, Häberli has this to say about the inspiration for this collection:

“My personal heritage was essential for this project. Knowing the gastronomic business well (restaurant & hotel in my family), my aim was to integrate this knowledge in a modern shape. Not losing the scientific functionality of a shape in relation to the liquid. The idea for the glass range was to create a balance between tradition and modernity, between celebration and daily use, a balance with one and different uses. In a way, I tried to find the essence in-between. The shape was a challenge for production. The most difficult detail was the stem going into the completely flat bottom plate. This detail with the trapeze shape of the bowl gives the unusual character of the glasses. The water glass is without a stem and can be used as a shot glass or table wine glass in a daily function. The carafe has a pinky colour inspired by having some wine drops in a glass that reflects in the whole body. Sometimes drops on a table line leave the same pinky colour.”

Back in 2006, when Josh and I were first-time homebuyers and didn’t have loads of money (not that we do now!) we still wanted to buy a few pieces of furniture that were at least a little cut above the rest. We decided that dining chairs would bring us the biggest bang for our buck, so we went down to the Central West End to visit our buddies at Centro Modern Furnishings to see what would fit within our budget.

At the time, I wanted 6 matching dining chairs. In the past few years, my taste has changed a bit, and I prefer the look of 4 matching chairs with either a bench or 2 complimentary chairs to accent the table. Nevertheless, we wanted to find a chair that was unique, and not overused (think Eames, Stark, Bertoia). Ultimately we decided on the SEGESTA ARMCHAIR designed by Alfredo Häberli.

Originally, I had paired these modern plastic chairs with a French style antique wood table (also white) but after our house fire in 2008, we bought new chairs for our dining room and stacked these chairs away in storage. I have seen an upholstered version of the chair, so maybe we’ll be able to order the upholstered pieces and retrofit them to our chairs...? Let's hope!

Folk Yeah!

For some time now, I’ve wanted to chronicle the works of art and pieces of furniture that my husband and I have collected over the years. We have bought directly from artists, through auctions, in stores, online…you name it, we’ve done it. But for me, personally, I like working directly with an artist/designer. Although I haven’t had any work commissioned per say (not counting tattoos) I have, as I mentioned, contacted artists directly to see what they’ve got, and have ended up with some great pieces as a result of this method of shopping.

One of the first artists whose work we had to have, is a gentleman by the name of Tim Mancinas. We first started seeing his work around St. Louis in, oh, I don’t know, 2006? 2007? I remember one of his paintings, “Career Woman” was displayed in one of my favorite shops in The Loop – Phoenix Rising. And he had done a mural for another shop in The Loop (now closed, unfortunately) – Fifi’s.

Now, I know this topic is less about design and more about manners, but with all of the Christmas shopping I’ve been doing lately, I’ve been in gift mode. And since part of this discussion is related to hostess gifts, I figured I’d post away!

Please click on the link below for the full story!

But before we dive into the fun stuff (gifts) I want to cover a few simple but important rules that’ll ensure you’re an appropriate and fun guest at any party.

First of all, don’t be a schmuck, RSVP in a timely fashion! Whether you’ve received a formal invite which requires you to respond via snail mail or an informal invitation which simply requires you hit reply in your e-mail to say yay or nay, do not wait until the day before the party to reply. The hostess has a million other things to worry about (menu planning, food prep, cleaning, etc.) and certainly doesn’t have time to track down all of her invited guests to get an accurate head count. Also, before you think about bringing an uninvited guest, phone the hostess to be sure it’s okay!

The second rule to being the best guest you can is to show up on time! This is especially important if you are attending a dinner party or an event which might have a schedule of events (think White Elephant gift exchange, birthday party or shower). If something unexpected comes up and you’re running late, get in touch with someone at the party to let them know you’re running behind so as not to disrupt the flow of the evening.

Onto the third rule - bring a gift! With all of the preparations the hostess will be consumed with in an effort to orchestrate the best party, the least you can do is bring a little something to show your appreciation and thanks. To some of us, this is a no brainer. We were taught not to show up empty handed as a guest. But this gesture isn’t always taught. Some of us operate on a ‘taking turns’ level. For example, you host this party, I’ll host the next. While I think this is a great idea, we’re talking about being the best party guest, and the best party guest always come bearing gifts! I have put together a little idea board for hostess gifts, but we’ll get to that in a minute. There’s a great little article over at www.emilypost.com which digs a little deeper into the topic of gift giving.

The fourth rule…one of which I’ve broken many times (but let’s not talk about that!) pertains to hogging! Whether you’re pigging out on all of the food at the buffet or slamming drink after drink at the bar, it’s a no no; be considerate of others. Before you take seconds (or thirds) wait until everyone has had a chance to nibble. Also, be mindful of how much alcohol you’re consuming. Not only do you not want to be the drunkest person in attendance, but you also don’t want to come off as though you’re taking advantage of the ‘free’ drinks. It’s impolite.

Last but not least, the fifth and final rule is so easy but can often fall off our radar. Thank you notes! If you had a great time, let the hostess know! And if you didn’t, lie. Thank them anyways. It is my own belief that a hand written note is more thoughtful than an e-mail or call, but sending a text is better than nothing.

The overall concept is simple. Remember the Golden Rule - Do unto others as you would have them do unto you? Well, if you keep this in mind as you prepare for a party, you’ll be fine.

Now, for the fun stuff! When shopping for a hostess gift, keep in mind the tone of the party. It may be appropriate to simply bring a bottle of wine or fresh cut flowers, but take into consideration the overall objective for the party when gauging what to bring. And of course, if you’re an out-of-town guest who’ll be spending the night, choose your gift based on the length of your stay and how elaborately you’ll be entertained. Below are some gift ideas which can all be purchased for $50 or less. Of course you’ll need to decide on a menu, for both food and drinks. And you’ll want to be sure to have appropriate decorations/serving wear, not to mention ample seating for your guests. But one thing that is often over-looked, is music. Don’t fall victim to procrastination; take the time to gather festive holiday tunes and put together a playlist. Then, let your iPod do the rest!

Last but not least, prepare yourself for the party as well. We often get so wrapped up in the details that we hardly leave time to for ourselves. My advice? Get as much done the day before the party (i.e. cleaning, cooking, table setting, etc.) to allow for your own pampering the day of the throw-down. It’s important to look as put-together as possible, if only to convince yourself that you have nothing to stress about. Ladies, the morning of your party, get a manicure. Hell, gents, do the same. Your hands say a lot about you…so let them say, “I look amazing!” Next, pick out a fabulous pair of shoes. If you have to sacrifice comfort for fashion, do it! It’s only one night and you’ll impress everyone with your dedication to style in addition to everything else. And finally, break out the jewelry. Men, this means cufflinks and watches…you’re not off the hook. It’s these special occasions that warrant a bit of bling, so don’t be shy.

Now, with all of this having been said, my biggest piece of advice is to enjoy yourself. You’ll find yourself mingling and much more relaxed if you've taken the time in advance to be sure you're prepared. Which means you won’t have to cling to a bottle of bubbly all night!

Below are a few of my picks that’ll help turn your party into a successful night to remember.
Initially, I was frustrated with a couple of large retail chains due to their recent introduction of similar carts in their catalogs. I wasn't upset because the carts-as-tables were being popularized, I was irritated at what the stores were charging for items they had found in old warehouses. I received a lot of feedback on my post and received quite a few e-mails about furniture restoration in general, so I thought I would re-post it here and re-open the conversation.

The Rant

A couple of years back, I saw a photo of this old cart which was used in an upholstery shop and thought it would make a beautiful coffee table. If my memory serves me correctly, it was constructed out of stainless steel and cast iron. So, after our house fire last year (and the subsequent destruction of my coffee table that I designed and built - shown below) I thought, "How great would it be to have one of those carts!?"

It took me months and months of constantly researching online, but alas! I found one! Well, it wasn't like the metal one I had seen but it did have the cast iron wheels and instead was constructed of wood. I found it at Wood Stock Supply, Inc. out of South Dakota, where I had seen an advertisement for their excess inventory, to included their antique lumber carts. I didn't waste any time. I immediately ordered two! One of which we are using as a coffee table, and the other of which I plan to hang on the wall above the stairwell.

Not the greatest photo in the world, but you get the idea.

Interestingly, just last month I received a catalog from Pottery Barn with this shitteous interpretation of a "salvaged dolly". The resemblance is almost offensive, but hey, I guess you have to get your inspiration from somewhere!

Wheel Coffee Table | $699.00 Pottery Barn

More disturbing than the similarities is how this table sells for seven hundred dollars! Seriously? I bought two antique carts and had them shipped from South Dakota for under three hundred!

So if that wasn't bad enough, last week I received an e-mail from a friend of mine (who lives in Kansas City) inquiring about my coffee table. As I was responding to her, letting her know who to contact if she wanted one, my "new mail notification" pops up with an e-mail from her with the following link: Furniture Factory Cart. I checked it out and I noticed two things right away.

One - this cart is EXACTLY like the one in my living room.
Two - this cart has a price tag of $910!!! Now it's listed for $1095!

Furniture Factory Cart | $910.00 Restoration Hardware

The amazing thing about this is that Restoration Hardware is selling ANTIQUE carts that have been "restored by a Northern California craftsman". Oh! Now I understand why I would pay 9 times it's value! Don't get me wrong...by no means do I think I'm the first person in history to want to use a lumber cart as an occasional table, but I just find it funny that after a good hundred years, all of the sudden this style is being perceived as "trendy".

Well, it's getting late, so I'll wrap things up. Hats off to Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn for raking their customers over the coals. In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy the carts I bought from Wood Stock Supply, Inc. and hope that interested parties will look to them for their purchase as a means of saving money and supporting ma and pa shops!Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03722889588744578906noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6627890652302596930.post-60861617580583254502011-10-21T19:14:00.006-04:002012-02-03T16:52:44.103-05:00Barn Owls, Cardinals and Eugene Levy!
Last month, two of my amazing friends were joined together in marriage. Because both the bride and the groom have artistic backgrounds, I wasn’t about to pull something off their registry for their wedding present. So, in an attempt to find something creative and unique, I found myself googling “folk art”. Over the past couple of years, I have developed a weird obsession for outsider art…I can’t really say when or why it started, but I remember seeing something about Butch Anthony on American Pickers and thinking, “That’s it. I’m in love with folk art!”

One of the hits I got when googling “folk art” was Yard Dog, a contemporary folk art gallery located in Austin, Texas, and right away I saw a piece that blew me away. It was a painted Hank Williams woodcut by Lisa Brawn and instantly I needed to know more. After spending an hour (or more) on her website, I decided that I had to have at least 20 of her painted woodcuts! Lisa Brawn's work is truly captivating. The colors are so vibrant and her one-of-a-kind technique is clever. She makes woodcuts out of Douglas Fir, but she doesn’t print them - she paints them, creating a nice layering of texture. Another thing I like about her work is the subject matter - in addition to owls and loons, she's painted everyone from Ghandi to Joe Strummer.

In the end, I didn’t purchase ANY folk art for my friends, but I definitely found a new favorite artist! Let me know what you think, and go check out the rest of her work on her website: www.lisabrawn.com.
